How to Power Cycle Your Cloud VM; Determine Your Power Cycle Window.

Instructions on the Power Cycle Process: 

Step 0) Before Power Cycling your server, read our guide on preparing your server for a successful reboot. After you've followed these guidelines, proceed with the next steps.  

Step 1) Within the Cloud Server VM, fully power off the VM. Example commands:

  • Windows Powershell: shutdown.exe -s -f
  • Windows Command Prompt (cmd.exe): shutdown -s -f
  • Linux: shutdown -h now

Step 2) Verify that the VM is fully inaccessible. A fully inaccessible VM should not respond to pings, and the console should be blank.


Step 3) Hard reboot the VM via the mycloud control panel or via the API. The hard reboot call will actually power on the instance since it's currently powered off.  If you receive a message that looks like "Cannot 'reboot' instance 123456-789-10111-1213-14151617181 while it is in task_state powering-off" do not be alarmed.  This is normal, it means that it is still going through the shutoff process.  Simply try the hard reboot again in a few minutes.

  • Via the panel: Click Actions dropdown, click Reboot, Reboot Server
  • Via the API: nova reboot --hard <instance_uuid>

IMPORTANT NOTE: A SOFT REBOOT IS INSUFFICIENT to make the "VENOM" patch fully effective to resolve this security vulnerability.  


Accessing the Per Instance Power Window Schedule

When performing large scale maintenance events, Rackspace will provide a granular, per instance power cycle windows via the Cloud Control Panel, First and Next Gen Cloud Servers APIs, and a Command Line Tool.

Cloud Control Panel

Our Cloud Control Panel at will display a visual indicator in the Cloud Servers list next to each server with an upcoming power cycle.  Safari and IE will show the timezone information, Chrome and Firefox will not.  This is due to daylight savings time issues.

The time that will be shown is local to the machine you use to access the Control Panel.  So if your computer is in CST you will see the time in CST if it is in GMT you will see the time in GMT. 

The same details are available for each individual server on the Cloud Servers detail page.

A CSV export of all Cloud Servers with pending power cycles can be downloaded from the Cloud Servers list. Only servers shown in the Cloud Servers list will be included in the CSV, so adjust your region selector to include all regions where you have servers prior to downloading the CSV. Note: The CSV download is not available to Internet Explorer users at this time.

The notification will be removed from each server following a successful power cycles of the server instance during the maintenance window.

First and Next Gen Cloud Servers APIs

The power cycle window for each Cloud Server affected by this maintenance is populated in the server metadata under a key named "rax:reboot_window". The metadata value is a semi-colon separated set of timestamps representing the start and end of the server's maintenance window in UTC. For example, a reboot window of 02:00 to 04:00 UTC on March 1st would be represented as:

- Key: rax:reboot_window
- Value: 2015-03-01T02:00:00Z;2015-03-01T04:00:00Z

Command Line Tool

We have created a cross-platform command line tool that can be used to retrieve the power cycle window(s) for all of your Cloud Servers and optionally generate a CSV file. Additional details are available in the README file of the GitHub repository.
