Upgrading Ubuntu from 14.04 to 16.04

  • We have an Ubuntu 14.04 cloud server, originally set up from the standard Rackspace image. All current upgrades and dist-upgrades have been applied. The 16.04 LTS release has been available for over six months so we thought it would be safe to upgrade by now.

However, while trying to upgrade to 16.04 I'm getting a bunch of errors and the upgrade doesn't complete. See error messages below.

Does anyone know what this means, and how to resolve the issue so we can complete the upgrade to the new LTS version?

  • hi.

i'm going to update ubuntu to v.16.04 on my servers as well.

anyone has answers to the above question and/or tips, hints, warnings about such an upgrade?

about my try, i stopped the first attempt when, after the "do-release-upgrade, the termnal told me:

    -------

    No valid mirror found

While scanning your repository no mirror entry for upgrade was found. This can happen if you run an internal mirror or if the mirros information is out of date.

Do you want to rewrite your 'sources.list' file anyway? If you choose 'Yes' here it will update all 'trusty' to 'xenial' entries.
If you select 'No' the upgrade will cancel

    -------

as if the rackspace repo has no clues about ubuntu 16…?

in short: if anyone ever had success on upgrading ubuntu from 14 to 16, could you please share your experience? i can't find any pages on this, in the rackspace support section (something like this one: link, for example)

  • oh, well, after having saved an image of the first server i'll decided to run the upgrade.
    and here's my experience.

well, 50 minutes after the system was on, with all of my services (apache/php/mysql/shoreline/proftp…) updated and running with no pain at all. :)

    what i do, in short:
//my system was updated, but better to check again
    # apt-get update
    # apt-get upgrade
    # reboot
    //let's go!
    # do-release-update

"Do you want to rewrite your 'sources.list' file anyway" -> Y

every time it asked me to take a decision (about grub menu.lst and config files of various services to be updated/replaced) i chose the default value by hitting "enter" (always "mantain the original").
after the reboot, for my environment i needed just to install a few php modules and to tuneup the php.ini with my values. that's all.
very nifty… compared to the previous upgrade from 12 to 14, above all.

    hope this can help someone.
